Unfortunately, in America it seems with each passing generation we continue to lose the war on drugs. Studies show that drug abuse among teens has increased to 10%, the highest percentage among any age group.
Within this age group the highest percentage of drug abuse was using marijuana; secondly is pharmaceutical pills, then inhalants such as butane and nitrous oxide, the smallest percentages where made up of cocaine, heroin, and acid.
Studies also show that the average age a person first tries drugs has been lowered to 13 years old. This is a startling statistic as pre-teens are still developing and not responsible enough to grasp the short-term and long-term side effects; until it is too late.
This increasing trend has led to an increased demand for drug rehab and drug addiction treatment centers across America. This increasing trend of abuse in teens has not only risen in illegal drug abuse, but also in alcohol abuse. Additionally, studies show an increase in demand for alcoholism treatment among teens.
This is a battle that needs to be started at home. It is important to give your teens a healthy home environment and educate them on the short-term and long-term side effects of these drugs, before it is too late.
